La Chaumiere Review

A French classic in DC, La Chaumiere resides right on the border between the Georgetown and Foggy Bottom areas of the district. La Chaumiere is well known for French food done right, and its decor (both inside and out) made that statement loud and clear.

The atmosphere inside La Chaumiere is cozy and rustic, with an air of European sophistication. La Chaumiere's food is similarly comforting, classic, and elegant. Their dishes are presented wonderfully and taste even better than they look--especially their Baked onion soup, or Gratinee Lyonnaise.

Sadly I cannot take the credit for this photo. Credit goes to La Chaumiere's website at http://www.lachaumieredc.com/menu_dinner.html

Their menu is diverse and highlights classic French cooking techniques and preparations. A large portion of their menu is fish-based, but each item is unique unto itself. If you're a wine connoisseur you have come to the right place--their wine menu is one of the most impressive and exceptional that I have ever seen. Their selection is primarily red wines, but there are more than enough whites to choose from as well. And no French meal would be complete without a dessert. The souffles are mile-high, pillow-y, and scrumptious.

La Chaumiere is an expensive meal, but the atmosphere, service, and food quality make the meal worth the hefty price tag.

My 3 top dishes:

1. Baked Onion Soup -- Just look at that picture.
2. Fish Stew -- With clams, shrimp, mussels, and scallops.
3. Chocolate souffle -- This takes about 20 minutes to make, so be prepared to wait a little.
